No change to floor height
Under-timber hydronic underfloor heating
Aluminium diffusion plates and pipe fitted between the joists, so the floorboards warm without raising the floor.
Under-timber hydronic heating
Where a floor is timber over joists, the heating goes in underneath rather than on top. Aluminium diffusion plates are fitted between the joists and the hydronic pipe runs through them, so the plate spreads the heat across the full width of the board instead of leaving it in a narrow strip above the pipe.
Nothing is added above the floor, so door heights, thresholds and skirtings all stay as they are. That makes it the practical option for a renovation or a period home where lifting the floor level is not possible.
Installation
The plates are 0.8 mm aluminium with two pipe channels at 200 mm spacing, designed for timber joist floors or battened timber floors over a concrete slab. They take 16 mm heating pipe and diffuse the heat faster than a screed system.
Where there is subfloor access the plates and pipe go in from below and the floorboards are never lifted. Where there is no access underneath, the boards come up, the plates go in and the boards go back down.
Insulation is required under a suspended timber floor and is recommended when the system is installed over a concrete floor. The finished timber over the plate should not exceed 20 mm.
Things to consider
- Suits timber joist and battened timber floors
- No change to finished floor height
- Access from below makes the job faster
- Maximum 20 mm of timber over the diffusion plate
- Insulation required under a suspended floor
- Runs off a heat pump or a gas boiler
